Alexis Silk
Since receiving her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005, Alexis Silk has devoted herself full-time to creating figurative art in hot-sculpted hand-blown glass. Aesthetically and conceptually, Alexis describes the source of her inspiration as being all around her. “The human figure in its many forms is a window on and connection to our humanity (and divinity). There is always ambiguity. Power, for example, can be expressed as ugly, demeaning, and objectifying, or it can be beautiful, strong, and joyful. In the end, the work is always about people, our relationships with each other, nature, and society.”
Technically, Alexis pushes boundaries to make what’s possible possible. Sculpting free-hand while the glass is hot on the blowpipe, she creates figures up to larger than life-size. Alexis’s work is featured in the best galleries in Murano, Italy, and galleries in London, Macau, and the United States. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Art Museum of Greater Lafayette, Indiana, Odunpazari Museum, Eskisehir, Turkey, and major private collections in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. She also exhibits at selected art shows, including SOFA Chicago, International ArtExpo NY, Florence Biennale, and Carousel du Louvre Paris.
