Joan Miró

Spanish | b.1893, d.1983.

Joan Miró Ferrà was born on April 20, 1893, in Barcelona. At the age of 14, he enrolled in a business school in Barcelona while also attending La Lonja's Escuela Superior de Artes Industriales y Bellas Artes. After completing three years of art studies, he took a job as a clerk. However, after experiencing a nervous breakdown, he left the business world and returned to his art studies, attending Francesc Galí's Escola d'Art in Barcelona from 1912 to 1915.

Early in his career, Miró received support from the art dealer José Dalmau, who organized his first solo exhibition at his gallery in Barcelona in 1918. In 1920, Miró made his first trip to Paris, where he met Pablo Picasso.

From then on, he split his time between Paris and Montroig, Spain. While in Paris, Miró connected with poets such as Max Jacob, Pierre Reverdy, and Tristan Tzara, and he actively participated in Dada activities. Dalmau also arranged Miró's first solo exhibition in Paris at Galerie la Licorne in 1921. His work was showcased in the Salon d’Automne in 1923. In 1924, he joined the Surrealist movement. His solo exhibition at Galerie Pierre in Paris in 1925 became a significant Surrealist event, and he was also featured in the first Surrealist exhibition at the same gallery that year.
