Nechita’s public art project is a larger-than-life mural recreating her “Set The Stage” canvas painting, displayed on the iconic corner of Hollywood and Highland, commissioned by The Hollywood Partnership committee and Arts Bridging The Gap, an organization that brings arts programs to children in underserved areas through immersive arts. The mural was unveiled in November 2021.

“It has become abundantly clear to me, both as a woman and an artist, that while accountability can be burdensome, it is the only way towards growth. The responsibility for driving change and evolution lies in our own assertion of what is wrong and what deserves a voice. Too often, the voiceless are reduced to their vulnerability of being a minority. Then, tragically, complacency sets in, and life moves on, leaving behind the issues and people who need championing.

As members of this mosaic, it is our duty to uphold our communities and fellow humans. For me, the art experience should stand unapologetically strong in its power to generate messaging, and this mural shows how profoundly engaging imagery can be. I take my responsibility as an artist seriously, and while my hope is to galvanize actual change, at the very least, I would like to catalyze a conversation. — Alexandra Nechita
