John Wayne

Andy Warhol
John Wayne, 1986.
From Cowboys and Indians.
Unsigned, screenprint on Lenox Museum Board.

The “Cowboys and Indians” series explores the romanticized portrayal of the American West in film, literature, and television. By juxtaposing historical figures with fictional characters, Warhol challenges viewers to consider the constructed nature of these narratives. Like many of Warhol’s works, this piece explores the cult of celebrity and the construction of personas in popular culture. John Wayne was more than just an actor; he embodied a specific image of masculinity and rugged individualism that resonated with audiences. Warhol’s work challenges viewers to consider the manufactured nature of this image and its impact on society.
