It is universally precious to witness a child with a big dream. Often, we see those dreams as oversized and unattainable, but for the child, there is no stress about the obstacles they must overcome to achieve their aspirations of becoming an astronaut or president. They feel only the excitement of working toward their goals. Children continue to inflate their ambitions without the fears that we experience as adults. As viewers see themselves reflected in these overinflated dreams, they are reminded of the ambitions and imaginations of their own childhoods. Before the disruptions of everyday adult life, what dreams did you have for yourself? Why did you stop pursuing them with all your energy?

Gadi Fraiman’s newest series features young children immersed in play, inviting viewers into a world of innocence and joy. Each “Balloon Girl” focuses on the implicit characteristics of the joys of childhood, aiming to transport viewers to a place where children can dream freely. Gadi has created hyperbolic images of young girls experiencing a purity that has not yet been tarnished by adult concerns. Inspired by his grandchildren running barefoot and fully engaged in life’s pleasures, Gadi watched them play and felt transported into their world. Observing children at play brings a freshness that adults never tire of witnessing. Still, it also evokes a nostalgia for the youthful emotions and virtues we have lost, reminding us of a time when we were free from any awareness of suffering or defeat.
