Pompeii
Helen Frankenthaler
Pompeii, 1976.
Drypoint, Etching, and Aquatint in Colors on Archival Paper.
Hand-signed and numbered at the lower margin.
Custom framed with museum archival materials.
Published by Donn H. Steward, Halesite, NY.
The gentle vertical arrangement of reds and pinks evokes the appearance of layered stone, soil, or even the remnants of frescoes, directly reminiscent of the ancient ruins of Pompeii. The flowing, brushstroke-like movements and textured marks blend painting with printmaking, blurring the line between these two art forms. Frankenthaler’s use of subtle tonal shifts adds both depth and mood, almost like a memory of a place rather than an exact image.
