Radiant and expansive, Southern Exposure captures Helen Frankenthaler’s lifelong exploration of color as both subject and atmosphere.  The composition evokes the intensity of sunlight and the vastness of open space, offering a sensory impression rather than a literal scene. Frankenthaler’s mastery lies in her ability to transform color into experience: heat, light, and air seem to emanate directly from the canvas.

A pioneer of Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting, Frankenthaler developed the revolutionary “soak-stain” technique in the early 1950s, profoundly influencing a generation of painters. In Southern Exposure, her signature sensitivity to gesture and hue is distilled into a work of striking clarity and meditative power.
