Manoletina takes its name from a type of bullfighting maneuver associated with the legendary Spanish matador Manolete. For Miró, who was deeply connected to his Catalan and Spanish roots, bullfighting symbolized ritual, drama, and cultural identity. The bullfighter is a simplified figure with a large head and a small body. The bull is also simplified, with a large head and a long tail. The colors are vibrant, with red, yellow, and blue shades. Manoletina is a dynamic and energetic print. The bold colors and gestural forms create a sense of movement and excitement. The print is a celebration of bullfighting, but it is also a meditation on the nature of violence. The print was created in 1969 when Miró was 76 years old. It is one of his last major works on the theme of bullfighting.
