Salvador Dalí’s Kneeling Knight, also known by its French title Chevalier à Genou, is an original hand-colored etching from the artist’s Faust suite. Created in 1968, the series draws inspiration from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s dramatic story of ambition, temptation, and the supernatural, particularly the dreamlike atmosphere of Walpurgis Night. Dalí presents the kneeling knight through fluid, expressive lines that give the figure an almost spectral presence. The subject evokes ideas of courage, devotion, surrender, chivalry, and mortality, while the composition’s shifting forms reflect Dalí’s fascination with dreams and psychological transformation.
