Salvador Dalí
Magiciens, Spectre and Rose, (Spectre à la Rose), 1968.
Original drawing, watercolor, and ink on archival paper.
Hand-signed in ink, in the lower margin.
Framed and wall-ready.

Spectre and Rose is a preparatory Study for the “Night of Walpurgis” chapter from Goethe’s Faust novel, illustrated by Salvador Dalí in 1968. This large watercolor and ink drawing, much larger than the etching created after it, depicts a Magician celebrating the end of Winter and announcing Spring with flowering roses, a symbol of regeneration, creation, light, and spiritual love.

Spectre and Rose is an original watercolor-and-ink drawing by Salvador Dalí on archival paper. Delicate washes of color and fluid, expressive lines bring together the spectre and the rose, two contrasting images that reflect Dalí’s fascination with dreams, transformation, beauty, and the subconscious.

Unlike a limited-edition print, this unique, hand-created work offers a direct connection to Dalí’s artistic process. Hand-signed in the lower margin, the artwork comes from the distinguished Pierre Argillet Collection, formed through the artist’s celebrated collaboration and friendship with publisher and collector Pierre Argillet. Its originality, provenance, and intimate scale make it an exceptional opportunity for collectors seeking a unique work by one of the 20th century’s most influential artists.
