The 100 Flowers (1967) is an original hand-colored drypoint etching by Salvador Dalí from the Poems by Mao Zedong suite. Published by Pierre Argillet, Dalí’s close friend and longtime collaborator, this signed and numbered work reflects the artist’s fascination with symbolism, abundance, and poetic imagery. Printed on Arches paper, the composition exemplifies the dreamlike imagination and technical mastery that define Dalí’s graphic works.
Mao Zedong (also spelled Mao Tse-Tung), the iconic figure and absolute leader of Communist China and the leader of the Cultural Revolution, was also, surprisingly, a calligrapher and a graceful and eloquent poet. In the midst of the Cultural Revolution in China, which was soon followed by the May 1968 riots in France, Pierre Argillet brought Mao Tse-Tung’s “Poems” to Dalí. Tickled, the artist decided to create eight illustrations, some of which were political satires. The “Hundred Flowers” are shown as towering fleurs-de-lis, symbols of royalty, with people attempting to reach them. © Dali – Argillet Collection.
