“When I started to be attracted to painting in my childhood, my focus was on how to manipulate oil paint or watercolor; both mediums were enjoyable. I started watercolouring at the age of 5, and as you know, my first experience with oil happened as I recall at the age of 13. The subject matter was, at that moment, romantic scenery such as sunset or seascape with a boat, etc. It was playing with color that captured my attention more. I recall being more attracted to old masters, including Turner, Corot, Fragonard, and others. Impressionism began to capture my attention in the early 20th century, and the first was August Renoir and Claude Monet being among the first. Then, Vincent Van Gogh captured my attention with his bright colors in his rendering of Provence. I guess I understand why. I was born in Lebanon, with the same luminosity as the South of France.” – Samir Sammoun.
