Lagoon Lullabies is a recent series created in the Tahiti studio and rooted in the visual language of emotional regulation and the human need for “soothing.” That need first led me to Tahiti 25 years ago, after the loss of my close friend Charles Schulz in 2000, when I needed to experience the world in an entirely new way. From my first time in the lagoons, I felt an immediate sense of calm and internal regulation, akin to a child’s lullaby.

The series follows the Coconut Radio works, which explored learning through communication. Lagoon Lullabies extends that idea, recognizing lullabies as a timeless form of communication used across cultures to pass down tradition and knowledge through soothing song.

For the past 25 years in the Tahiti studio, visual “lullabies” have shaped the work. Built on columns ten feet above the lagoon, the studio’s lights reflect off the water and back onto the thatched ceiling above where I sleep. This movement of color and light has become part of the pictorial space, creating a rhythmic, calming atmosphere that surrounds each character in a lagoon far removed from the outside world. — Tom Everhart, 2025
