Wearing Jim Dine – Tom Everhart reflects on the relationship between his Schulz-influenced art and the established fine art world, questioning whether his work could be seen as more than cartoon imagery translated into painterly form. Around 2008, twenty years into working with Charles Schulz’s forms, he created a limited series inspired by a Schulz strip showing a large robe with a floating Woodstock head. Everhart connected this to Jim Dine’s robe paintings, which he felt conveyed dignity in the transition from visual dress to undress, leading him to title the series Wearing Jim Dine.
Everhart has regularly referenced art history throughout his work to signal this new direction. In 2018, he revisited the robe theme with two new prints: one references Snoop Dogg’s Sparky Snoopy character, and the other features Snoop Dogg’s music, which often played in the background during the work’s production. “Shorty,” referring to the shorter Character of Woodstock, references a name heard in the language of Hip Hop.
